Bon Voyage Guys…

The Mystery behind the birthday cakes solved

Birthdays are fascinating, aren’t they? They make us feel special. They are much more than just a day on the calendar. And why are they so? It’s because they bring along lots of gifts and good wishes from our near and dear ones. And what is the best way to celebrate them? Birthday cakes and candles.
So friends, join me on an exciting journey to know more about how the age-old tradition of blowing out candles on the birthday cakes began.
birthday
Evolution of ‘Birthday’ Cakes
The idea of serving cakes on the occasion of someone’s birthday comes from a German tradition in the 15th Century.
German bakers began marketing a special type of cake for birthdays that were people used more traditionally in wedding celebrations. The cakes though were not actually cakes as we know them today (they were more like a sweet form of bread) and were called “Geburtstagorten”.
The recipe for Geburtstagorten developed as time passed, with further sweet ingredients and additional layers added. By the time the 17th century arrived, the Geburtstagorten had become a much fancier affair with icing and decoration. However, Geburtstagorten from day one was an expensive treat that was only really accessible to the wealthy. It wasn’t until industrial processes permitting mass-production developed, that Geburtstagorten became more affordable, and the tradition of birthday cakes really took off.

Today we have so many varieties of cakes to relish: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, butterscotch, pineapple, black forest, truffle cakes, mousse cakes, cheese cakes, fruit cake, cupcakes and the list is endless. We also have ice cream cakes, a very ‘cool as well as sweet’ kind of combination which makes us delightful.

Apart from that, in India, we have our home-baked cakes, generally baked in a traditional electric-heated oven by our grandmothers, or nowadays even in a microwave oven (the recipe of which even many of us know, but end up making it a bit messy!), which tastes wonderful with some coffee and tea. The moment one pours the batter into the oven and baking starts, the sweet aroma wafts through our nostrils and slowly the creamy batter changes into a golden brown, soft spongy cake. Irresistible. Hot Cakes. Absolute bliss.

Why put candles on cakes?
Putting candles on birthday cakes is a tradition that has been around for a long, long time. The Ancient Greeks, often burned candles as offerings to their many gods and goddesses.
According to some historians, for the Ancient Greeks, putting candles on a cake was a special way to pay tribute to the Greek moon goddess, Artemis.
They baked round cakes to symbolize the moon. They added candles to represent the reflected moonlight. The light from the candles made the cake “glow”, giving it the appearance of a mini-moon!
Blowing out candles
In the mid 19th century, the practice of blowing out candles on birthday cakes began to gain popularity.
Some people believed that the smoke from the candles carried their wishes and prayers to gods who lived in the skies. Others probably believed that the smoke helped to ward off evil spirits.birthday
In Switzerland, it was considered bad luck to eat birthday cake before blowing the candles.

In old pagan beliefs, candles were regarded as having a magical ability to grant wishes. Many people believe that the birthday boy or girl must make a silent wish before blowing out the candles. If all the candles are blown out in one breath, the wish will come true, and the person will have good luck throughout the year. On the other hand, if it takes more than one breath to blow out all the candles or if the person tells someone what the wish was, it will supposedly not come true.
What do you think? Have you ever made a birthday wish? Did it come true? Share your experience with us.

BRICS 2017: Everything about the Event

Well, I was discussing the BRICS summit with my sister when her friend who heard us partially asked in confusion how it would enhance the Indian Economy. Then later I got to know she was referring to “bricks”. Not her fault though as the homonym misguided her. And thus a question popped up how many individuals know about the term? Not many I guess. And thus let me brief you all about it.
An economist Jim O’ Neill coined the acronym BRICs in 2009 for the emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The four held their first summit in 2009 and were joined by South Africa in 2011.The five nations in BRICS have the bilateral relationship and that involves mutual benefit, equality etc. Four out of the five above countries are in the top 10 list of populated countries. Thus almost half of the world’s workforce is in BRICS countries. The current leaders of the member states are

  1. President Michel Temer (Brazil)
  2. President Vladimir Putin (Russia)
  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi (India)
  4. President Xi Jinping (China)
  5. President Jacob Zuma (South Africa)

The recently held BRICS summit was the 9th edition which was held in Xiamen, China. The theme of the three-day annual summit was “Stronger Partnership for Brighter Future”. Some highlights of the event are below:
Four documents were signed at the meeting which are –
a.)BRICS action agenda on economic and trade cooperation
b.)BRICS action plan for innovative cooperation
c.)Strategic framework of BRICS customs cooperation
d.)Memorandum of understanding between the BRICS Business Council and the New Development Bank on strategic cooperation

“Whatever we do, we will impact the world substantially. So it is our solemn duty to make a better world – brick by brick or through BRICS..,” Mr. Modi said. He also suggested 10 “noble commitments”. It includes creating a safer world, creating a greener world, creating an enabled world, creating an inclusive world, creating a digital world, creating a skilled world, creating a healthier world, creating an equitable world, creating a connected world and creating a harmonious world.
At the “Dialogue of Emerging Market And Developing Countries,” PM Modi spoke about development agenda ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikaas’. He also called for coordinated action on counter terrorism, cyber security and disaster management.

Flies- Why do they sit on you and what role they play?

I had been wondering the same since childhood…Why do flies sit on me? What do they want? They don’t even suck blood like mosquitoes. They love to sit on fecal matter, dead and decaying things. Are we same as them? Some of you must be feeling like throwing up thinking of the same. First, let me discuss their role.
flies

Role of flies to the environment

Some flies feed on dead and decaying organic matter (detritivores). For example, Muscidae or the Sphaeroceridae. They are very useful to the environment as they speed up the nutrient cycling, thus leading to a richer soil(indirectly though). They play the largest role in serving as food for birds and fishes in wetlands. Flies consist of the most biomass in wetland fauna(Great!).
They also serve as food for migrating waterbirds, who need more energy. They are especially more important in salt lakes, where only brine flies or any other salinity-adapted flies form the largest portion of protein. Flies are also very beneficial in controlling potential eutrophication(growth of algae that leads to deoxygenation of the water and death of aquatic life) with their numbers, they reduce algae proliferation, even if there occurs very high algal productivity.
Also, Do check out The Facts about The Total Solar Eclipse this August.

So, next time you say Flies should be eradicated, think twice! If they disappear, the number of birds and fishes will decrease at an alarming rate.

Why do they sit on you?

Houseflies are scavengers. Just because they obtain a sense of warmth and nourishment, like their favorite food sources like feces, food and rotting flesh, they love to sit on the human body. They can’t bite us, but they can easily suck salt, dead skin and oil. All these wastes from our body are edible for them.
They vomit on solid food to liquefy it and make it edible. The flies are always in search of warm places to defecate, vomit and breed. They carry a lot of germs along with their hairy legs, germs from dung heaps and all those shabby things.
I don’t say that you should allow them to breed, my intention was to answer why they alight on us. You should definitely stop them from breeding in your houses. They are vectors of various infectious diseases, like typhoid, dysentery, tuberculosis etc.

Why do they rub their hands and legs?

Flies have compound eyes, antennae, and legs to sense the world around them. Yes, you got it right! They need to clean them in order to fly with precision. Interesting, isn’t it?
