With tall deodar trees, mesmerizing mountains, curvy roads and heavy snowfall, Manali (a paradise for newlyweds and snow lovers) are one of perfect winter destinations in India. People might think that one should go there only in Winter but the beauty of the place could actually be pointed out only in this season with the snow-covered mountains everywhere.
This Switzerland of India caters numerous things to see- Rohtang Pass, Hampta Pass, Manikaran (where one can take a hot sulfur bath), Parvathi River, Jogini Falls, Snow Point, Pandoh Dam, Solang Ropeway, Bhrigu Lake, Manali Sanctuary and so on.

Travelling to this place is one of the most cherished memories of many. This is the only place where you can go for trekking in frozen ice and it’s incredible. Bounded by the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram, words fail to express the beauty of this place. It is said that a man can suffer from both sunstroke and frostbite at the same time in Ladakh only while sitting in the sun with his feet in the shade.

This is the reason behind different types of Train No.

So yesterday I was coming from my DRDO labs to my home and there was 3 hours long wait for my train at the station and as it was midnight I was having nothing to do so was surfing the internet while also viewing the surrounding. A question suddenly struck in my mind after a train just passed through the station. Why are there different types of train no. in every train? Some start with 0, Some start with 1 Why is it so?
Yeah I am an engineer and like every other engineering guy out there, I trust Google more then my College professors(Sorry If you got Offended). So I just got my laptop quickly and started surfing. Yeah soon I found the answer and of course, it was interesting. So I thought I should share the knowledge with My readers too so that they too can have some knowledge in the railways.
So Please Leave your Facebook for a minute and Just look Here so that you too can explain later to your friends and families. The rule for the five-digit train no was started On December 20, 2010
train no.
So The first digit of the train no. can be any no. between 0 to 9 which resembles
  • 0 is for special trains (e.g., summer specials, holiday specials, etc.)
  • 1 is for all long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Jan Sadharan, Sampark Kranti, Garib Rath, Duronto, and other classes.
  • 2 is also for long-distance trains; it is to be used when train numbers starting with 1 are exhausted in any series.
  • 3 is for Kolkata suburban trains.
  • 4 is for suburban trains in Chennai, New Delhi, Secunderabad, and other metropolitan areas.
  • 5 is for passenger trains with conventional coaches
  • 6 is for MEMU trains
  • 7 is for DMU (DEMU) and railcar services.
  • 8 is currently reserved
  • 9 is for Mumbai area suburban trains
The Second digit of the train followed by the first digit resembles
The significance of the second and later digits depends on what the first digit is. Below, the different number series are explained, based on the first digit.
0, 1, 2: In the case of special trains, and long-distance express trains, i.e., trains starting with digits ‘0’, ‘1’, or ‘2’, the remaining 4 digits signify the railway zone and division exactly as in the pre-2011 4-digit scheme. In fact, most 5-digit numbers for long-distance trains as of this writing [4/11] are created simply by prefixing ‘1’ to the former 4-digit codes. See below for an explanation of the 4-digit system. The zonal codes (second digit) are shown below:
train no.
  • 0 is for Konkan Railway
  • 1 is for CR, WCR, and NCR(?)
  • 2 is for superfast, Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, and some other classes of trains regardless of zones. For these, the next digit is usually the zoning code.
  • 3 is shared by ER and ECR
  • 4 is for NR, NCR, and NWR
  • 5 is shared by NER and NFR
  • 6 is for SR and SWR
  • 7 is shared by SCR and SWR
  • 8 is for SER and ECoR
  • 9 is for WR, NWR, and WCR
Let’s Take an example of the train
    18477(Puri-Haridwar Utkal Exp.)
  • The First digit is So it will be a long distance train (1773 km is Distance between Haridwar and puri)
  • The second digit is so it denotes this train is of SER or ECoR (this train is from East Coast Railway)
  • The later digits denotes the home shed or station from where rakes of the train are been used
Now there are some other train no. for metropolitan cities. they have some other fixed train no. which denotes the place they are from Such as
  • Trains starting from 30 to 39 belong to the Kolkata suburban.
  • Trains starting from 90 to 99 belong to the Mumbai suburban.
  • From 40 to 49 belongs to other cities such as Delhi and Kolkata.
train no.
So here It is guys That were some serious stuff in the Indian Railways. Now the next time you see a train with a train no. you can exactly tell which types of train it is and also the place where the train belongs to Right?
